Whole Class Reading Approach
Within our whole class reading lessons, pupils learn to develop their reading fluency skills and their comprehension skills.
Throughout the week, reading is sequenced to ensure there is teaching of fluency, vocabulary and comprehension questions focusing on VIPER (Vocabulary, Inference, Prediction, Explain, Retrieval) skills.
Whole class reading is taught daily to pupils from Year 2 to Year 6. Throughout the week, the lessons have both a discussion focus and written tasks. At the start of the week, we focus on activating pupils prior knowledge to support their understanding of the text. We also focus on text marking to develop fluency skills. Following this, lessons focus on vocabulary and comprehension questions with continued fluency practice.
Reading for pleasure
Every class has a class story selected by the class teacher or in combination with the pupils, which is read daily. We believe if the pupils see teachers enjoying and recommending books, this will help inspire and motivate pupils book choices.
Book recommendations, buddy reading, reading with the community and author studies are some of the ways we help encourage pupils to develop a love for reading.
