  • Westcliff Choir Event

    Mon 18 Jun 2018

On Monday 11th June, Westcliff Primary Academy choir performed at a charity Evening of African and Gospel Music at the Langstone Cliff Hotel in Dawlish Warren.

The event was in support of Nayamba School, a community primary school for children in rural Chisamba, Zambia, where children who previously could not go to school due to distance and expense are now getting a first rate education.

Westcliff choir performed two songs: 'Kumbya', which was originally a spiritual song that made a simple appeal to God to help those in need, but has become well known as a camp fire song, and 'Ba nu wa', a traditional Liberian lullaby meaning "Don't cry pretty little girl, don't cry".

Together with five other local primary schools and Dawlish Community College, we also performed a gospel medley, including several well known gospel pieces including 'Swing Low, Sweet Chariot'.

The evening was a fantastic celebration of African and gospel music that moved everyone in the audience. The children worked extremely hard and delivered a stunning performance!

Certainly the biggest success, however, is that the event raised £700 for the Nayamba Trust. This sum will be enough to feed all of the children at the school two meals a day, for two months, with every single penny raised going to the charity.

    Well done Westcliff!
