At Westcliff Primary Academy we pride ourselves on creating a creative curriculum matched to children's interests. Children in all classes are actively involved in the planning process for their learning.
Our core focus is to ensure children have gained the skills, concepts and knowledge needed in Reading, Writing and Maths for each year group expectation. We use the National Curriculum skills as a baseline for our planning which can be seen in more detail in the Medium Term planning documents. See the Parent's guides below for overall National Curriculum information for each year group.
Making our curriculum and learning meaningful is extremely important to us and classes base their learning around Topics that bring together the wide range of subjects taught. Each Unit covers one topic each term which bring together all aspects of learning with an engaging theme. We take on a holistic approach to children's learning meaning that in one session children may be covering Literacy, Art and ICT objectives or indeed a range of other subjects.
We use letters and Sounds and Phonics Bug to teach reading and writing to children in Foundation and KS1 and use a book band scheme for our reading books.
We are working towards a Maths Mastery curriculum in which all children are able to succeed in Maths, we use a range of concrete apparatus, pictorial representations and written methods to support children's learning in Maths. More details can be found in our Calculation Guidance which shows the methods children are taught in each year group and our Curriculum Offer which outlines our approaches to teaching Maths and all other subjects.
Please see Unit and Year Group Planning documents below showing the subject content for this term.
Should you require any further information about your child's learning and the curriculum they will be taught, please do not hesitate to contact your Unit Leader or the Head of Teaching and Learning.
